FAQs about Beavers

  • Q: Where and when does Third Widdifield Colony meet?
    A: We meet Thursdays at
    Ecole Ste-Anne, 235 Albert St., just off O'Brien Street. The hour-long meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. For information or to volunteer as a leader, please email us.
  • Q: How old are Beavers?
    A: Beavers are boys and girls age 5, 6 or 7.
  • Q: What do Beavers do at meetings?
    A: A regular meeting includes brief opening and closing ceremonies. In between, we play games and do crafts. We also go on field trips and have special guests.
  • Q: How often are weekend activities held?
    A: The Colony occasionally meets on a weekend for fundraising, ie Apple Day and Scoutrees, or activities like a hike, sleepover or Beaveree.
  • Q: How much does it cost to join? 
    A: Registration
    (2009-10) is $160. See our Fundraising & Fees page for more details and to see how you can help lower our fees. Beavers also pay weekly dues of $1 and some activities may have event fees.
  • Q: Is financial assistance available to reduce costs?
    A: Yes.

  • Q: What fundraising activities do Beavers do?
    A: Last year Third Widdifield youth raised money on Apple Day, as well as sold Scout Popcorn, and participated in Scoutrees. This year our group will raise money on Apple Day, sell Scout Popcorn, participate in Scoutrees, and may have one other fundraising activity.
  • Q: Do Beavers wear a uniform?
    A: The Beaver uniform consists of a hat, vest, necker and badges. Third Widdifield supplies the necker and badges. Checker our Uniforms page for the location of the badges. Beavers supply their hat and vest.
  • Q: Where can Beavers buy a uniform?
    A: New uniforms can be purchased at a Scout Shop, in person, by phone, fax or email. The nearest Scout Shops are in Sudbury, Ottawa and Toronto. Check our Scout Shop Page for more information. Used vests and hats may be available from other Beavers in September, or from second-hand stores.

  • Q: Where and when does Third Widdifield Pack meet?
    A: We meet from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays from September to June at
    Ecole Ste-Anne, 235 Albert St., just off O'Brien Street.
  • Q: How old are Cubs?
    A: Cubs are 8, 9 or 10.
  • Q: What do Cubs do at meetings?
    A: A regular meeting includes brief opening and closing ceremonies and inspection. In between, we play games, do crafts and badgework. We regularly have guests and theme nights, like collector night. We also go on field trips or have outdoor activities about once a month.
  • Q: How often are weekend activities held?
    A: Pack usually meets at least once a month on a weekend for a hike, camp, other fun event or fundraising activity.
  • Q: Are weekend events mandatory?
    A: No, but they are fun and often count toward a badge or star.
  • Q: Who is in charge during a meeting?
    A: The old wolf, Akela, and Baloo, Chil,  and Bagheera plan the schedule and meetings, and lead the activities. New leaders and parent helpers are always welcome. Email us.
  • Q: How much does it cost to join?
    A: Registration

    Cubs are also expected to pay dues of $1 at each regular meeting.
    Special activities, such as camps, often but not always have an event fee ranging from $5 to $25.

    A: New uniforms can be purchased at a Scout Shop, in person, by phone, fax or email. The nearest Scout Shops are in Sudbury, Ottawa and Toronto. Check our Scout Shop page for more information.
    Used uniforms and books are usually available from other Cubs in September, or from second-hand stores and (books only) Allison the Bookman on Main Street East.
  • Q: How does a Cub earn badges?
    A: Cubs can earn more than 40 badges, stars and awards by completing the requirements outlined in the Cub book. Some badges and requirements will be done at meetings and special events. Cubs can do others at home under the supervision of a parent and be tested on them during a regular meeting.

    A: Scouts range in age from 11 to 14.
  • Q: What do Scouts do at meetings?
    A: Scout meetings open and close with brief ceremonies. In between, Scouts play games, learn Scout skills, do badgework and more. We regularly have guests, do outdoors activities and have field trips.
  • Q: How often do Scouts meet on weekends?
    A: Scouts meet on weekends about once a month for hikes, camps, other fun activities and fundraising.

    A: The Troop Scouter is in charge with the help of other adult Scouters and the Patrol Leaders. Scouts set the schedule and plan the meetings with the help of the Troop Scouter. New adult Scouters and parent volunteers are always welcome. Email us.

    Third Widdifield supplies the necker, woggle and all badges. Scouts supply their own shirts, vest, sash and book.
  • Q: Where can you buy a Scout uniform?
    A: New uniforms, the traditional or new option, can be purchased in person, by telephone, fax or email from a Scout Shop. The nearest Scout Shops are in Sudbury, Ottawa and Toronto. Check our Scout Shop page for more information.
    A few used traditional uniforms may be available in September from other Scouts, in second-hand stores and (books only) from Allison the Bookman on Main Street East.
  • Q: How does a Scout earn badges?
    A: Scouts can earn more than 40 badges and awards by completing the requirements as outlined in the Scout Handbook. Some requirements will be fulfilled at meetings and special events. Scouts will need to work on their own to achieve many of them, including the Chief Scout Award.
  • Q: Where do the badges go?
    A: Check out our Uniforms page for details. With the new uniform option, only badges and awards placed on the sash can be worn.
